Introduction

Welcome to the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology web site. The Department of Microbiology and Parasitology at the Peking University School of Basic Medical Sciences was formed following the merger of the Department of Medical Microbiology and the Department of Parasitology. The former Department of Medical Microbiology grew from its predecessor Department of Bacteriology at the Peking University College of Medicine, which was founded in July, 1946.

The mission of the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology is to provide Medical Microbiology and Parasitology curriculum to medical, dental, nursing, public health, and pharmaceutical science students, to offer graduate training in MS and Ph.D. programs, and to conduct cutting-edge biomedical research on infectious diseases. The Department's research currently focuses on important human pathogens with strong programs in hepatitis B (HBV), C (HCV), and E (HEV) viruses, viral epidemiology, translational research on HBV-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), diagnostic technologies, vaccine development, and anti-infective drug discovery. The wide range of research projects and graduate studies are carried out at the departmental laboratories and research centers, including the Center for Infectious Disease Research, the Center for Development of Viral Hepatitis Diagnostics, the Laboratory of Viral Carcinogenesis, the Laboratory of Molecular Virology, the Laboratory of Molecular Bacteriology, and a Biosafety and Containment Laboratory.
