Medical Parasitology

"Medical Parasitology" is a discipline that studies parasites infecting humans and the diseases they cause. It encompasses medical protozoology, medical helminthology, and medical entomology, making it a significant branch of pathogenic biology. This field is closely related to basic medicine, clinical medicine, preventive medicine, and medical laboratory science, and is a required course for undergraduates in relevant majors. The course focuses on common parasites and vectors prevalent and harmful in China and worldwide. It covers their morphology, life cycle and ecology, interactions between parasites, hosts, and the external environment, and laboratory diagnosis. Emphasis is placed on key epidemiological factors and principles of prevention and control.

The Parasitology Teaching and Research Office is responsible for the theoretical and practical teaching of "Medical Parasitology" for various majors and academic programs across the university. Additionally, it offers the elective course "Parasites in Daily Life" to all university faculty and students. The faculty have contributed to the authorship and editing of several national-level textbooks and have developed a "Medical Parasitology Computer Multimedia Courseware," which has been highly praised by faculty and students at other institutions and awarded by the Ministry of Health's Department of Higher Education. The office has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching from Peking University and the School of Basic Medical Sciences. Several faculty members have been honored with awards for excellence in teaching, teaching management, teaching innovation, and mentorship of innovative talents from Peking University Health Science Center and the School of Basic Medical Sciences.
